Introduction to Communication-Improve Your Listening Essay
Introduction to Communication-Improve Your Listening - Essay Example my personal concerns is however a strategy to overcoming the barrier because shifting focus from self is likely to reduce effects of my concerns on my concentration through establishing psychological stability. An effort to concentrating on a message in a communication is another strategy to overcoming the barrier and is likely increase amount of information that I capture (Beebe, Steven & Beebe Susan, 2011). Poor attitude is another barrier to my listening. I am often critical during communication and am quick to identify possible mistakes in a speakerââ¬â¢s presentations. I am equally judgmental over a speakerââ¬â¢s physical appearance and negative attitude shifts my attention from a speaker and associated message. Focusing on message content, rather than its structure and the speaker, is the possible strategy to overcoming the barrier because it can reduce my criticism and improve my ability capture information in communication through focusing on message details (Beebe, Steven & Beebe Susan,

How sustainable is hydroelectricity generation Assignment
How sustainable is hydroelectricity generation - Assignment Example The turbine is connected to an electric system which through its rotation, an electric field is created which in turn creates an electric force that is harnessed and stored in grids to be distributed and sold to customers during peak times when there must be additional sources of energy. From Interview: According to Ron Taylor who is an experienced electrical engineer, hydroelectric power is sustainable. Experts need to establish the climatic shifts of the area where the project is to be built. Proper planning should also be done to ensure sustainability of the project. From Research: Through technological advancement, the industrial sector has achieved equipments which consumes low power so that the generated power would be economically viable to enhance high productivity in the long run. However, through enhancement of power storage systems by the establishment of digital capacitor banks which are responsible for both power correction and stability, adequate power is generated and used economically to reduce resource wastage (Huggins, 2010). It is recommended that cost effective power plants like hydroelectric plants should be constructed to lower the level and rates of ozone layer depletion which negatively impacts on the global climatic change. From Interview: Ron Taylor further states that, contrary to wind energy which is difficult to maintain, hydroelectric power is easier to maintain since it has a longer maintenance window. It is ranked among the worldsââ¬â¢ preferred power source with low effects on the environment; for instance, the global warming influenced by gas emissions (Huggins, 2010). The most expensive part of the project is the initial cost of installation, which is high as compared to the other sources of power, which are less costly to install but difficult to maintain. From Research: The ability to spend much money on maintenance entirely depends on the procedure involved in the maintenance process especially when

Coal chemical looping Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Coal chemical looping - Research Paper Example As it has been reported that the global demand for energy is likely to be fulfilled by the exploitation and utilization of fossil fuels in decades to come, the need for developing effective systems for the capture and storage of CO2 has become indispensible (Yue 2010). While, the significance of this observation is undeniable the present systems and frameworks which are utilized extensively in the industry are inadequate and do not support the advancement of certain aims and objectives that are associated with the development of suitable technologies. As noted by Yue (2010), present solutions for solving the issue are marked by the absence of cost-efficiency, capture efficiency and conversion efficiency which is an alarming scenario for both researchers and analysts alike. This observation proposes that the technology of chemical looping combustion (CLC) and its related processes have emerged as an innovation which presents numerous prospects and opportunities for the development of energy and power-related technologies by minimizing the risks, limitations and drawbacks that are associated with the solutions that are currently and presently available within the industry. Numerous studies and researches have established that the CLC technology boosts of impressive efficiency rates for the purpose of producing electricity and hydrogen in scenarios where the system of gasification is associated and integrated within the chemical looping technology (Yue 2010). Since the inception of the innovation, empirical studies have also been able to establish the types of suitable components that should be installed within an effective CLC system to maximize desired outcomes. This aspect involves the selection of solid fuels that can be used in chemical looping in addition with the oxygen carriers which have the potential to enhance the oxidation process. Even though, these observations have revealed the possibility of utilizing an extensive range of carbonaceous fuels and ca rriers, the scope of this paper focuses on the process of coal chemical looping such as the coal-direct looping process and the process of syngas chemical looping. Furthermore, the paper also explores the practical applications of chemical looping combustion in organizations such as General Electric and Alstom. In conclusion the research examines the advantages, challenges and limitations that are associated with the process of coal chemical looping in the light of recent researches and studies. The application of chemical looping combustion (CLC) processes is a revolutionary advancement and innovation in the industry, as stated by Yue (2010): Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a new alternative to conventional combustion that prevents the CO2 from being mixed in the combustion gases. This is accomplished by preventing the air-N2 to be present in the part of the reactor system where the oxidation of the fuel takes place. (p. 527) The introduction and subsequent incorporation of ch emical looping techniques and strategies was impelled by the absence of frameworks that could be applied for the separation and conversion of chemicals during the occurrence of various product-related procedures (Fan 2011). While, this observation is reflective of the traditional demands and needs which initially required the launch of chemical looping techniques, contemporary applications of chemical looping essentially aim to fulfill the need of establishing a modern, optimized and effective

Comparative Corporate Governance Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words
Comparative Corporate Governance - Assignment Example Either way, the only time that accountability comes into play is when there is a crisis. In this way, managerial accountability issues are the same across jurisdictions. I. Corporate Governance in the United States Corporate governance and governance arrangements vary widely from country to country, and to illustrate this an in-depth examination will focus upon the UK and the United States. The first thing to understand about the United Statesââ¬â¢ corporate governance is that it evolved after the Enron and WorldCom scandals of the early 1990s to early 2000s. In order to understand why corporate governance in the UK and the United States evolved, one must under the precipitating factors in their evolutions, and that was the Enron and WorldCom scandals in the late 1990s-early 2000s. Corporate governance was different for the United States in the 1980s, because, during this period, hostile takeovers changed the way that corporations did business. 1 Leveraged buyouts were costly mane uvers, which made managers sensitive to the market price of their firm. This, in turn, led to great risks in inflating the stock prices. This was coupled with widespread deregulation and the rise of CEO pay.2 Since CEO pay was tied to the companyââ¬â¢s performance, the CEO had reason to inflate the corporate numbers, because this, in turn, would inflate the salary of the CEO. The tie from the companyââ¬â¢s performance to the CEO was further reason for the CEO to obsess about the day to day price of the firm. What this means was that, since the CEO pay was tied to the performance of the company, there was further reason for the CEO to inflate numbers, because it would also inflate his or her salary. Because of this tie from the performance of the company to the CEO pay, the CEO was given further reason to obsess over the day to day price of the firm. Moreover, there was a failure of accounting in catching the Enron and WorldCom debacles.3 Arthur Andersen, the accounting firm be hind the Enron scandal, went from being one of the most well-respected professional firms in the world to a shamed company that was not only responsible for the Enron scandal, but securities frauds in Waste Management, Sunbeam, HBOCMcKesson, The Baptist Foundation and Global Crossing as well.4 While the U.S. has also traditionally believed in the power of the free market,5 in the wake of the scandals, the U.S. implemented a series of rules, as codified in the Code of Federal Regulations, by which corporations must abide. Some of these rules involve transparency in the disclosure of executive compensation.6 According to the SEC, all corporations must disclose any remuneration made to the CEO, CFO and the three most highly paid officers.7 The rules apply to the following disclosures: ââ¬Å"(1) tabular disclosures regarding executive remuneration and director remuneration;(2) narrative description of other types of remuneration and any information material to an understanding of the t abular information, and (3) a Compensation Discussion and Analysis (ââ¬Å"CD&Aâ⬠)â⬠8 . The way that all companies must disclose this information is through their annual proxy statement, which the SEC's website makes available on-line.9 Additionally, there are other regulations that are designed to increase transparency about executive and director compensation. For instance, there are regulations that require disclosure regarding ââ¬Å"(i) beneficial ownership of public company securities by persons owning 5% or more of

Genre Is Important for Defining Works of Fiction Essay
Genre Is Important for Defining Works of Fiction - Essay Example The film, Hanna, clearly depicts characteristics of three genres: myth, superhero tales and fairy tales. According to a review of the movie by Bradshow, a Myth remains as a fictitious person, story or thing. In accordance to Jennifer, the genre of fairy tales often deals with stories that got folkloric fantasy possessing characters like fairies, elves, goblins, dwarves, plus some elements of magic or enchantment. The genres of superhero tales often contain a major character that stands out to be indestructible despite evil always trying to destroy the character. In the essay below, one will try to establish if the genre of myth exhibited in the movie Hanna more accurately reflects the truth in the film than do superhero tales and fairytales. In the movie, Hanna, the truth in the film could be extrapolated from the events related to the genre of myth. It the movie, an ex-Criminal Investigation Agent, Erik, trains her daughter in the wilds of Finland to become a ruthless assassin desti ned to fulfill on goal. The ideal setting of isolation totally contributed to the truth in the story since the father dedicated the entire girlââ¬â¢s life in learning to become an assassin. Furthermore, isolation from the real world provided an excellent environment for the girl to become ruthless. In having no upbringing like a normal child, the girl knew of one thing in life, to kill. By being two of them in the wild, they both learned survival tactics as they hunted for their meals. In relation to review by Rapold, the story remains more fictitious since the whereabouts of the Erik and Hanna remained unknown, even the Criminal Intelligence Agency, contributing to the truth of the story. From a critical perspective, any person that wishes to kill his or her enemy always needs to be prepared and be ready to surprise the enemy when the right time comes. Erik prepared Hanna for a single mission, to kill a Criminal Investigation Agent, Marissa. It is the above events related to the genre of myth that do bring the element of truth in the movie rather than the genres of fairytales and superhero tales. In the story, Hanna usually read Grimms fairy tales. The Grimms fairy tales often becomes associated with violent and horrific tales that became not consistent with fairy tales contributing to the truth of the story. Hanna, being a trained adolescent girl, becomes depicted in the story as a smart soldier, with stamina and strength like a well trained adult soldier. Her training remains quit fictitious to the reading since it is impossible for a girl that age to become a top notch assassin. Furthermore, Hanna had never interacted with the real world and met people apart from her father ever since she was born. In relation to a review by Rapold, it also becomes fictitious when a girl that has never killed any person in the wild turns to become a ruthless assassin in the real world. In trying to give the movie some truth in regard to the mission Hanna had been assign ed, the directors had to include some mythical elements. The director generally tries to link the character to and tries to fit it in the general society. Hanna runs away once she activates the signal to show their whereabouts to the Criminal Investigation Agency. It remains also mythical when Hanna adapts and camouflages in the society. In accordance to Bredshaw review, after Hanna becomes captured by the Criminal
Analysis of Sequential Lesson Plans Dissertation
Analysis of Sequential Lesson Plans - Dissertation Example ed within the classroom due to constraints of time and space, the teacher can present guidelines to students encouraging independent study, by setting take-home projects or library assignments in such a manner that the student can work individually. In this manner, classroom space is optimized so that the teacher can regulate and direct work done outside the classroom. 3. Compacting is a process which allows students "to demonstrate proficiency in curriculum outcomes, units or courses and progress to more appropriate/challenging instruction." (Bosch 2001). It is a system of evaluation which takes into account students' various skills and learning abilities, which "reduces redundancy and allows for advanced programming" (Bosch 2001). The analogy of computer programming is used in the understanding of classroom strategy and curriculum development to demonstrate that differentiation procedures have a well-defined goal and flowchart to direct the process of imparting learning. The process of differentiation may be differentiated from the federal government's initiation of the No Child Left Behind program, which is designed to ensure that the learning needs of every student are met during the process of pedagogical instruction. In his Foreword to the federal document profiling the designs and outcomes of the program, President Bush has said: The quality of our public schools directly affects us all - as parents, as students, and as citizens. Yet too many children in America are segregated by low expectations, illiteracy, and self-doubt. In a constantly changing world that is demanding increasingly complex skills from its workforce, children are literally being left behind. (Bush 2001) Thus President Bush links the process of classroom instruction directly to the overall... As the discussion declares a differentiated classroom is one in which the teacher focuses on optimizing the efficiency of each studentââ¬â¢s strengths, thereby prioritizing different learning skills with each student, depending on his or her individual requirements. Bosch has observed that ââ¬Å"in a differentiated classroom, teachers differentiate content, process and product according to a student's readiness, interest and learning profile.â⬠Learning profiles are therefore constructed for each student on the basis of his or her individual needs, and the studentââ¬â¢s readiness to learn and interest in the learning process are also factored in to the development of the curriculum, thus ensuring that the learning process is made holistic. According to the report findings one of the most seminal contributors to the filed of curriculum and classroom differentiation had been Carol Ann Tomlinson. She writes: ââ¬Å"squeezing students into a one-size-fits-all curriculum has left many behind. By differentiating your instruction, you can meet the needs of every child. She implies, therefore, that the curriculums that do not differentiate among learning levels create a constricting mould that propagates a ââ¬Å"one-size-fits-allâ⬠design for the curriculum, which causes many students to be left behind in the process of education. Cooper presents an invigorating account of a practical lesson he had with a class, and interprets the practical aspects of differentiation in terms of Tomlinsonââ¬â¢s principles.

Khmer Rouge Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Khmer Rouge - Essay Example à à à The Khmer Rouge or Red Khmer - a communist party - governed in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. However, they remained active even after the fall of their regime by engaging in guerrilla fighting against the new government. In other words, they turned into a terrorist group. Although they do not seem to be active right now - they were dropped from the list of foreign terrorist organizations of the Department of State because they "ceased to exist as a viable terrorist organization" (Cronin, 2003) - the time when they were active is too close and, therefore, they cannot be ignored. à à à Moreover, bearing in mind the genocide that the Khmer Rouge under the leadership of Pol Pot carried out in Cambodia, we should assume that the potential threat from this group implies threat for the lives of many people. à à à The Khmer Rouge are the perpetrators of the frightful genocide in Cambodia from 1970s. Although the Pol Pot regime (1975-1979) with the killing fields and the horrors of mass destruction is now a thing of the past, the Khmer Rouge seem to never have changed: "There is little sign that the ideology, leadership or social regulations of the Khmer Rouge have change significantly since their bloody reign from 1975 to 1979." (PoKempner, 1995) This conclusion is based on a report by Human Rights Watch, based itself on observations from 1994 to 1995, almost 20 years after the end of the Pol Pot regime. à à à Such evidence shows that a group with a history like that of the Khmer Rouges has little potential for change. Therefore, we should expect that their disregard for human life has remained the same over the years and any anti terrorist strategy should be developed with regard to that fact. à à à It is important to identify the specific military tactics of the Khmer Rouge so that we can be prepared for specific responses. Here are a few of the distinguishing characteristics of Khmer Rouge
