Initial Personal Development Plan Essay Example for Free
Initial Personal Development Plan Essay Study skills. During my GCSEs I wasnââ¬â¢t sure what I wanted out of life. I chose to study French, Graphics and History. I enjoyed French the most and did quite well in it, however if I had concentrated more I couldââ¬â¢ve done a lot better. I was also working in my dadsââ¬â¢ cafà ©. I enjoyed working at the cafà © a lot. It was hard at times to manage my time between School, working at the cafà ©, going to football practice and also making time to do homework and revision. In class I enjoyed myself a lot and got my work done fast so went on to do extra question or ââ¬Ëbonus questionsââ¬â¢. When I was in the classroom environment I felt more confidant in my work as I had the teacher to double check if I had any doubts but because I didnââ¬â¢t go over my work at home I feel it put me really behind .However having to juggle school, work, football and revision was very stressful and I didnââ¬â¢t do well as well I would have liked which put education in a negative light for me. I did consider at one point to stop my education after leaving school while I was at school because I didnââ¬â¢t believe I would be able to handle the pressure, however I knew that education is a very big part of my life and my familyââ¬â¢s life as everyone has been to university in my family so I felt I had to go to college and further my education. Through this time my teachers were very helpful, I found it hard to ask for at first but when I did seek advice it was definitely the right choice. It made it clearer what I wanted in the long term and helped boost my confidence a bit in my work. After school had finished, in the summer I worked full time in my dadsââ¬â¢ cafà © and learned a lot of new skills. I worked at the front of the shop. This made me in charge of taking orders, making sure the customers were happy, making sure the chef understood what the customer wanted, deal with complaints and come up with a fair solution. I got to experience what itââ¬â¢s like to run a business first hand, I got experience in taking stock, ordering stock, deliveries, cash handling, making targets, pushing sales, customer service and sorting the rotas out. This was my first time having a proper full time job, it was hard at times as at the beginning it a new environment and I wasnââ¬â¢t used to it, however I soon realised that one of my strengths is that I can adapt to new environments rather fast which has helped me in other jobs. While at college I studied Psychology, Sociology and English language/literature. I preferred psychology to my other subjects as I find behaviour very interesting and the cause behind it. Studying at college was a completely new environment, I didnââ¬â¢t have the same pressure as I did at school from my teachers, but however I had more pressure on me to get my work done on my done. I got a part time job as sales assistant in a mens shirt shop. The job was a one person shift job, so it was all up to me to make sales, attending to all the customers, making sure the shop was in a selling state. I soon moved from being just a sales assistant to supervisor which gave me more responsibility, I opened and closed the shop, cash handling, did the banking, ordering stock, sorting the delivery and sorting the rota. Again working and studying was quite stressful, but as I was enjoying my courses at college I did not find it as stressful as I did at school. I had more freedom and also more time so I was able to manage my time a lot better without the pressure. When it comes to my strengths and weaknesses, I sometimes feel my strengths can by my weaknesses. I have a strong sense of empathy which makes it a lot easier for me to get along for with different people and be able to communicate with them on their level. Also being able to speak more than one language has helped too, I speak English, Kurdish, Arabic and a bit of Swedish. Having a strong sense of empathy can be a weakness as I can be too pleasant towards people and can be a push over, but I can stand my ground if need be. I am very strong about my morals and I know where to draw a line between whatââ¬â¢s right and wrong. I believe one of my biggest strengths is my will power. Iââ¬â¢m very driven when it comes to my work, when Iââ¬â¢m in a selling environment Iââ¬â¢m very comfortable. Sometimes I am too driven and I can ignore things on the side. Being a very goal oriented person I sometimes forget to enjoy myself and spend too much time achieving my goals. Coming for the middle east a region that is very rich in oil and gas, I am inspired to work in the field. Not very many people from my part of the world work in managing our local resources, I wish to be able to work managing oil and gas and ensure all members of society benefit from the riches of the industry. One of my lifeââ¬â¢s dreams is to open an orphanage and educate the less fortunate. I firmly believe that an education is the only way to eradicate the social ills affecting my region. I am a firm believer in the fact that education is the cure for all evils. I hope by educating myself as a women from a region where education is not very common I hope to able to stand on my own two feet so as to be able to help others better themselves.

The person that I have interviewed Name : Tham Fook Ming Position : Business Manager Company : Daisan Enterprise Relationship : Uncle Name : Yip Weng Long Position : Business Manager Company : Yokohama Batteries Sdn.Bhd Relationship : Uncle Name : Teoh Meng Kwan Position : Manager Company : Hup Heng Motors Sdn Bhd Relationship : Cousin Definition of conflict A conflict can be both good and bad. According to the book The business communication handbook. 6th ed. Julie Catalano, p.240.(2003) by Judith D, a conflict occurs whenever two people,teams or groups have different wants or goals and one party interferes with the others attempts to satisfy these.Differences in the way people interpret facts,differences in values, and the various ways people take action to satisfy their wants and needs can all cause conflict. The conflict happened to myself The conflict I have been involved is a relationship conflict happened to me and my girlfriend. We argued because of that she refuse to look for a job after her SPM examinations. She prefers to stay at home rather than going to look for a short term job so that she can learn something new to get some experience. The primary sources of my conflict 3.1 Bad attitude of her The primary source for my conflict is that her bad attitude that makes her to have this conflict with me. She is so stubborn that she will never listen or even analyze what other people advice her to do. I have been advising her for nearly two months so that she will get a part time job to spend her time. Every time we quarrel about this quarrel and ended up nothing. She complains that she feel boring when she stays at home but she refuse to get a job and she doesnt know how to use and manage her time wisely. She always says that she wants to enjoy first before taking any courses. When I give advice to her, she will keep on telling me that her parents didnt say anything when she just stay at home without doing anything and not going out to work. 3.2 Lack of understanding between each other We dont really understand each other although we have been together for a couple of months. Maybe I dont understand her deep enough and also how she thinks and reacts. Sometimes we might be confused of what the partner thinks and wants. This also related to our communication problem where sometimes what she hears is different from my original intention. This will also lead to the misunderstanding in this relationship. We have problems in communicating because she supports only her own opinion and not the advice by the people who have more experience. She will never try to understand my feelings although I do always share my thoughts and feelings with her. She always agrees with her own opinion. 3.3 Different Perspectives and background What she thinks is totally different with me since we have a different background as I come from poor family and while she is from wealthy family. In some situations we might see things in a different way. Her parents spoiled her by giving everything she wants because they have only one daughter and one son so, she loves to blame. Before she do something that will destroy our relationship, she will never think about the effects to me and she is just being selfish and do what she thinks will make her happy. Most of our ideas are different maybe because of that she is still young and has limited ability to think in more perspectives. She will follow her friends idea when too many friends suggest the same thing. Feedbacks from the other party She agreed with the primary sources stated above as she understands her own attitude and behavior. She did complain that we have communication problem as we often argue for a small matter. Every time after we argue, we found that we still cant solve the issue. Although she doesnt like my advice but then sometimes she realize that she is wrong. Secondary sources of the conflict Peer influence As she is still a teenager, she can easily be influenced by her friends where her friends have the same background as her. She will do what her friends say because she thinks that what they say is right. They always ask her to hang out in the middle of the night. She will still hang out with her friend without me. Although I told her that this could be dangerous, she never try to listen to me. Different Expectations The life she wants now is to enjoy every day without doing a single thing while what I want is to concentrate on my studies as I need to have some better achievements to show her parents that I can work something out. What she expects is to have a life as a rich girl and I just cant afford to spend her all those expensive stuff. I always tell her that I am not a rich guy and I cant give you most of the things you want now, she will tell me that she wont bother about that and after a few days she told me that she is a very materialistic person and I can see it. What she wants are all high expectations items which I dont think I can give her. Raising Problems She always complains that I dont want to spend some time with her. In fact I was so busy with assignments and projects and how could I spend my time with her when there are so many assignments to be done in just a few days. I happened to be in a scenario where I promised to hang out with her and suddenly something happened in my family and I tell her that I couldnt make it, she didnt even bother about me and scolded me that I broke my promise. She just mad at me and she stopped talking to me for a few days. She will never try to understand the problem and think positively before making any decisions. Approaching the conflict At the end, I know that both of us will need to approach the conflict no matter what. I asked her out and we talk about what both of us want and need. With the positive thinking we both listen to each other and accept the fact that actually both of us have mistakes in the conflict as this relationship involve of not only one person but both must pay responsible when problem arises. We sat down and started to accept the ideas by each other and analyze the problem with multiple solutions and choose the best solution for our conflict. She decided to listen to my advice and slowly change some of her bad attitude. After choosing the right solution and finally the conflict is solved. The Proposal Proposal on Changing of the Product Name To : Mr. Jason Dalz ( President ) Mr. Michael John ( Managing Director ) Mr. Justin Bryan ( Chief Executive Officer ) Date : 25th March 2013 Subject : Proposal on Changing our Cereals Product Name Regarding the subject above, as a product manager I would like to change the name of the cereal. I believe that this will give consumers a brand new image and also will attract more customers where this will increase the sales of our products. Statement of the Problem For the past 3 years, the cereal sales of our company is decreasing.Therefore,an official meeting was held on the 13th of March with the sales team to identify the problem and we found that the actual profit do not meet the minimum profit estimation. Sales for the Prohealth cereal for the year 2011-2012 Year Earnings ( Thousands) 2010 $450 2011 $400 2012 $ 320 The sales performance for the cereal brand named ProHealth Analysis of the Problem We did a research to identify the main problem where we have distributed survey forms to investigate the main cause of the problem.As a result, we found that the main cause of the sales drop is because of the brand name of our cereal product.The feedback from the customers shows that the brand name Prohealth actually sounds more like health products than cereal to a large amount of customers and because of that they seldom pay attention to our products.In addition to that, they also think that the packaging of our products is not attractive as the picture on the box showed a women with a bowl of milk.In fact, it does not look like a cereal product. From the customers feedback, some of the customers recommended us to rebrand the product with a new name and a brand new packaging as the t packaging for Prohealth can only attract customers mainly aged between 60-69 we will need to attract younger consumers to consume our products.The name Prohealth can never attract attention and it will never satisfy customers expectations. The packaging for the two products: The Packaging for ProHealth The Packaging for Cerealize Questionnaire What attributes are seen from this Prohealth cereal? Will you buy a product named Prohealth? Does the packaging looks attractive to you? If NO please state why? How satisfied are you with the usage experience of ProHealth products? If NO please state why ? Please give suggestion on the name that is suitable. The market research report is as follows: Market Research on preference of the two new brand names (000) Age 10-19 20-29 30-39 40-49 50-59 60-69 70+ Brand Name ProHealth 8 4 5 3 7 15 5 Cerealize 12 9 11 6 4 19 7 (Preference of consumers to the two brand names) Survey Form Name : Age : Which one do you think is the best name for our cereal product? Please tick and state why you dislike the other name. ProHealth Cerealize Reasons why you dislike the other ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Solutions From the market research, we found that a new name for the cereal product will definitely show a brand new image to our customers. Customers would always expect the appearance of something new that they can have. From the research, some customers gave feedback on the name of our cereal product and some suggestions on the new name are given. A brand name is important attract customers and to affect the decision making of the consumers. The new name Cerealize is given by one of the customers after careful consideration that we pick from the list of selection of the new name.After a discussion with the marketing department, we found out a name that is suitable to become the new brand name of our cereal products which is the Cerealize where customers will have a clearer picture of what our products are about and what we produce. Once they see the word cereal, they will have an idea on their mind stating that this is a type of cereal product and the word lize brings a meaning specialize w here to show the consumers that our company is specialized in producing healthy cereals to the consumers. As the brand name is simple, consumers can easily recommend it to their friends. On the other hand, the packaging also should be changed as the illustration is not attractive. If they put a picture of some superheroes or cartoons on the box, this will attract kids to pay attention on our products and definitely they will convince their parents to buy it.This will help in widen the range consumers that we target. Hence, the sales of our cereal products will increase as the number of consumers increase. Conclusion In retrospect, the new name and a new packaging will definitely increase the sales of our products. It gives customers a new impression of our products and this name is suggested by one of the consumers. Besides that, it can also widen the range of consumers who consume our products. We can show a good image to the customers where we consider all the suggestion and feedbacks from the customers. Hence, this will build more credibility and the trust between the consumers and our company. After changing the name from ProHealth to Cerealize and the packaging of our products, I believe that our products will be more special than other cereal brands. I hope that you will consider adopting this idea of changing the name on the brand of cereal as this is the way to keep the good reputation of our company and to increase the sales performance of our company. Identity Crisis in Desirable Daughters by Bharati Mukherjee
Identity Crisis in Desirable Daughters by Bharati Mukherjee ABSTRACT: Immigrants have envisioned tales that exhibit experiences of independent and emerging countries. Cultures have taken up new form in the contemporary times, where the issues of Diaspora, globalization, consumerism, transnationalism cultural hyberidity and identity crisis have become new motif in the postcolonial literatures. The new issues give rise to identity crisis that evokes feelings of an individual that portrays socio-cultural setup that shows the blend of tradition and modernity. The new identity creates problems for Tara in Desirable Daughters by Bharati Mukherjee, where she is alienated, languishing in the angst and ennui of the diasporic experience, yet to carve out a niche for herself. In the novel, Bharati Mukherjee has struck a balance between tradition and modernity by representing past and present which is achieved through the female protagonist -Tara, who severed her links with tradition but remains tied to her native country. Tara is influenced by ancient customs and traditions, but is rooted to modern customs. She is conscious of her existential predicament which is mirrored in the epigraph: No one behind, no one ahead the path the ancients cleared has closed. And the other path everyones pathà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ goes nowhere, I am alone and find my way. Tara is alienated from the society as she oscillated between the nostalgic fascinations of a traditional past and the romantic and adventurous allurements of the present. The diasporic qualities exhibited by Tara establish the merging of the East and West which shows the clash. The Identity of the protagonist is highly assimilative, can adopt and accommodate herself both to her traditional Indian way of life and to her newly adopted American ethos. She tries to move away from the constrained identity and vacillates between two lives: maybe I really was between two lives.(251) Taras reconstruction of identity is rooted in her nostalgic and romantic recollection of her past. It is based on the flux of her thoughts about the past coming to her mind in the present but in fragments, and not whole. She tried to reconstruct her identity through her diasporic experience. She was attempting to redefine the importance of her cultures through space and time. Loneliness had made Tara a little wanton and wantonness had made her very lonely. In these five years she had changed beyond recognition, but other character Bish had not changed at all.Bish is also an upholder of tradition. He prefers the values of an imagined past than those of contemporaneity. The concept of home and migration is very much embedded in the narratology that Bharati Mukherjee presents in Desirable Daughters. It is the sense of migration which brings about a change to the identity of Padma, who has finally made New York her home, her land of choice. But her inalienable attachment to her home makes her the sustainer and preserver of Bengali tradition in America. The alien culture thus fails to subvert her traditional identity. On the other hand it only remaps nad reconstructs her cultural identity. Hence migration plays a crucial role in restricting individual identifies and cultural attitudes and perceptions. The novel is woven brilliantly which depicts the thoughts and feelings of three Calcutta, India-born Brahmin upper-class sisters, renowned for their beauty, brains, wealth, and privileged position in society. Mukherjee narrates their lives as they leave their conservative, sheltered childhood home, where they are inundated with culture, tradition, and values and inculcated with education by the Catholic nuns in their convent structured school and college. Two of them emigrate to America and the other relocates to Bombay, India. The three sisters, Padma, Parvati, and Tara, are born exactly three years apart from each other and share the same birthday.They are named after the goddessess name,hoping that they will survive and prosper in whatever they do. We are sisters three/as alike as three blossoms on one flowering tree. (But we are not), says Tara, the protagonist, quoting a poem. Desirable Daughters is the novel that takes a long time to lift itself from the surface and once it releases its themes and characters, it seems to get liberated from the trapped situation. Engrossed in Indian culture old and new, it keeps strucking down in tight little circles of detail that create an atmosphere of cramped inwardness, even suffocation. Bharati Mukherjee, like in her previous four novels and short stories, tries to portray the repression that enables the women of her culture nailed down in subservience to male desires. The feelings and emotions are discovered after exploring traditional Indian society. The novel is based on three strikingly-beautiful sisters from a privileged Bengali Brahmin family in Calcutta feel the tug between tradition and freedom as they try to meet expectations that are often wildly contradictory. The youngest, Tara Chatterjee, seems to have flown farthest from the nest. Tara is divorced from Bishwapriya (a Silicon Valley multimillionaire hand-picked for her by her father), shes raising a sensitive teenaged son on her own. The depressing part is that, she works as a lowly teacher, a choice which would be unthinkable in the culture of her birth. The story is narrated by Tara from her adopted San Francisco home, where she lives with Andy Karolyi, a strange sort of Hungarian Zen carpenter who earthquake-proofs houses. The lifestyle of the protagonist implies, a sort of free and easy hippie lifestyle, but nothing could be farther from the truth. In the novel the rebellion-gestures are merely trappings, or reactions against the gagging restrictions of Taras girlhood. Tara initiates her tale of repression in a curious way, with a legend about her namesake Tara Lata, also known as the Tree Bride a remarkable figure who became prominent in the fight for Indian freedom. After going in for more than twenty pages, Tara then delves into telling story of her own, which seems to be dislocating in nature. She recalls the utter lack of romanticism in her marriage, in which her father told her, There is a boy and we have found him suitable. Here is his picture. The marriage will be in three weeks. Tara, not knowing any other way, submitted: I married a man I had never met, whose picture and biography and bloodlines I approved of, because my father told me it was time to get married and this was the best husband on the market. Mukherjee dwells on every detail of this highly traditional occurrence. The father of the child bride is a traditionalist even though he is a lawyer educated in English and English law. The groom dies of snakebite and his family blames the bride as unlucky. Greedily the father of the groom demands the dowry. But the brides father takes his daughter into the forest where he marries her to a tree. She becomes a woman noted for her courage and generosity. Her American granddaughter visits her home. She has the same name, Tara Lata, as the old woman and like her she has two sisters. The contemporary woman is a divorced woman. Her ex-husband was the traditionally pre-selected bridegroom like his former wife a resident in America and now she lives with her lover, an American, in San Francisco. Her son introduces a young man who claims kinship as the son of her oldest sister, Padma. This is a kind of impossibility. An impossibility since her sister never had a child and a possibility since the familial relationships are so convolutedly secretive as to make the existence of the young man as her nephew plausible. It seems likely that the young mans claim is true and that Padma, Taras sister, did bear an illegitimate child. This is a momentous event for Tara. As the pampered child of wealthy Calcutta parents, she was sheltered from the poverty of the city and from all but the most severe political crises. She suffers the stress now of an immigrant with a child that belongs wholly to her new country. The discovery of Padmas child brings into focus all her inner disqu iet and the need to find valid connections. In the novel, Taras relationship with her two elder sisters is complicated, the flow of affection blocked by a certain formality and adherence to preset roles. Middle sister Parvati married a rich man and stayed in India, but by some miracle was able to select the suitable match for her. Parvati in her own way had established her identity, because of which it was said:Parvati, the pliable middle daughter had done the unthinkable: shed made a love match. He was certainly not what brains-and-beauty Parvati Bhattacharjee could have commanded on the Calcutta marriage market. Even though Paravati was given right to select her right match but after that she is depicted as one who is a meek follower and gets diminished by losing her real.She writes to Tara: I hope you arent doing bad things to yourself like taking Prozac and having cosmetic surgery. Please, please dont become that Americanized. The third, and the eldest sister of Tara, Didi, is married to a Mehta (an illustrious family which includes the conductor Zubin) and moved to New Jersey to pursue a career in television. But again, all is not as it seems. Her lifestyle is a thin veneer laid over the dense, pressed-down bedrock of tradition. She is considered to be most glamorous of all the three sisters. The other character Chris Dey, is represented as crisis in the novel. He is a young man who represents himself to Tara as Didis illegitimate son, conceived through an affair with a prominent businessman named Ronald Dey. This exposes an ugly under layer of culture to Tara, not the India of doting grandparents, not the India of comfort and privilege, but the backyard of family, the compost heap. The characters in the novel are not portrayed in the liberated form, they are trapped into different set of emotions trying to carve out a new identity for themselves. Tara is projected as a character who more of a status conscious tries to uphold the values of traditional society despite falling for different allurements in the present. Her elder sister, Didi pretends hard to be a pure character but falters when gives birth to her son, which represents misalliance.Chris Dey isnt really who he says he is, and in fact he feels like a device, something dropped into the story to keep things moving forward. In the end, the novel, tries to come back from where it started, where and the legend of Tara Lata the Tree Bride, but this device doesnt quite work either. The denouement somehow goes slack and does not yield a satisfying end to the story. The novel seems to be a family saga which could not bring out the desirable characteristics in the characters of the novel, that portrays them as a dominant in any sphere. The end is quite suspenseful and complex where the description of homeland may be magical but symbolic intention was lost. Bharati Mukherjee depicts a liquid society in her novels, ie a society in flux. It is a society of constant flow, the flow of migrants, the flow of machines, flow of criminals, flow of power structures, flow of people and commodities.Ãâà Amidst all the confusions the message was brought out clearly and it is represented as a fascinating beautifully written work of art that exhibits vulnerability that cannot be missed out.

Christianity and Abortion :: Papers
Christianity and Abortion The Christian belief in the sanctity of life is based on the teachings of famous Christians and on what they read in the bible, the teachings of Jesus. A quote from the bible which seems to support the view that abortion is wrong is from Psalm 139:13, verses 15-16, à ââ¬Å"You created every part of me; You put me together in my motherââ¬â¢s wombâ⬠¦ When my bones were being formed, Carefully put me together in my motherââ¬â¢s womb. When I was growing there in secret, You knew that I was there ââ¬â You saw me before I was born. The days allotted to me Had all been recorded in your book, Before any of them ever began.â⬠à This seems to be saying that god has already begun to have an influence on the life of a person before they are even born. The life of a person is already unique and god has already given them their own identity before they are born. If this is true, and the quote seems to be saying that it is, then abortion would have to be seen as a crime on the same level as murder. There are no good grounds for murder, one of the Ten Commandments says, à ââ¬Å"Do not commit murder.â⬠à So, if we were to consider only this quote then we would have to see abortion as fundamentally wrong, any justification for abortion would become a justification for murder, and we can see no justification for murder, the ultimate sin. Another quote from the bible would seem to strengthen this view, Jeremiah 1:4-5 à The Lord said to me, ââ¬ËI chose you before I gave you life, and before you were born I selected you to be a prophet to the nations.â⬠à This seems to suggest, as did the last quote, that God decides the fate of the child before it is born, abortion would prevent the child from Christianity and Abortion :: Papers Christianity and Abortion The Christian belief in the sanctity of life is based on the teachings of famous Christians and on what they read in the bible, the teachings of Jesus. For the Environment or For Creating New Businesses :: Environmental Environmentalist Essays
For the Environment or For Creating New Businesses What do you think of when someone talks about being for the environment or for creating new businesses? I know if I were asked that question the first thing that would come to my mind is the radical environmentalist. I tend to stereotype them into groups of tree huggers, protesters, members of Green Peace or the Sierra Club, and those that will only eat organic foods. On the other end of the spectrum is ââ¬Å"Big Businessâ⬠or those for the economy. When I think of these types of people I think of those that have no regard for the environment, they dump pollutants, and kill fish and birds. Their sole purpose in life is to make money regardless of the cost to the environment. In reality the two ends of the spectrum are melded together, one cannot survive without the other. Richard White in his writing, ââ¬Å"Are You an Environmentalist or Do You Work for a Living? Work and Nature,â⬠he refers to how individuals have created a large separation between nature and work. White states that ââ¬Å"most humans must work, and our work-all our work-inevitably embeds us in nature, including what we consider wild and pristineâ⬠(185). On an episode of the Simpsonââ¬â¢s Lisa falls in love with an environmentalist and helps him in his crusade to save the environment. The episode portrays the environmental group with all of the typically euphemisms associated with being for the environment. The leader of the group wears dreadlocks, Birkenstocks, and stages a protest of Krusty Burger and is arrested. In order to impress the leader Lisa takes on the fight to save the oldest living Sequoia from the Texas business tycoon. The Texan was portrayed as the big Texan with lots of money and no regard for the environment just build to make more money. Lisa becomes a ââ¬Å"tree huggerâ⬠and lives in the tree as a protest to prevent cutting the tree down. In the end Lisa leaves the tree and it is struck by lightening and falls. The fallen tree rolls down the hill out of control. It destroys the Hemp store and wipes out a factory. The morale gathered from the story is that without a compromise between the environmentalist and the businessman there is devastation for both sides. Part of the problem is the media exploits the two ends of the spectrum; it is either one way or another.
12 Angry Men by Sidney Lumet Essay
In the field of psychology and psychiatry, the trend has always been towards individual therapy. The trend in psychoanalysis has always focused in the individual that the individual role and participation in society has been deemed as secondary. However, recently the trend has been moving towards the group with consideration to an individualââ¬â¢s psychology having full bearing to the manner in which he interacts and participates in his society. Irvin D. Yalom has stated that there are 12 therapeutic factors involved in group psychotherapy. To be able to fully understand these concepts, a study of the movie 12 Angry Men will be analyzed in the point of view of Yalomââ¬â¢s factors. The movie 12 Angry Men by Sidney Lumet is about a jury of 12 men trying to decide the fate of an 18 year old boy who has been accused of murdering his own father. The whole movie takes place in the jury room where all 12 men are locked inside until such time that a unanimous verdict has been reached. The movie begins with 11 of the members of the jury voting that the child is guilty. The story then revolves on the process by which the 12th member, played by Henry Fonda, is able to change the verdict into a not guilty decision. See more:à The 3 Types of Satire Essay The movie becomes a perfect example of Yalomââ¬â¢s factors as well as group therapy as the dynamics that occur within the group slowly shows how each personââ¬â¢s subjective psychology and personality is brought into the interaction of the group which eventually finalizes the decision of the group. Four of Yalomââ¬â¢s factors are most apparent in the movie ââ¬â Group Cohesiveness, Interpersonal Learning, and Catharsis and Existential factors. Group cohesiveness. There are two kinds of cohesiveness and what differentiates the two is the reason for which that group stays together. The two kinds are emotion-related and task related. Emotion-related is the kind of group cohesion founded on emotional connection and feelings members have for the other members of the group. Task-related cohesion is founded on the goals that the group has set for themselves and the achievement of these goals is what makes the group cohesive. In the case of 12 Angry Men, the only similarity that these 12 men have is that they are all members of the jury for this particular case. In the beginning, as each member enters the room, a discussion of past jury duties are discussed and this duty served as a commonality between all the members of the jury. This commonality is a superficial factor that added to the groupââ¬â¢s cohesion. The main factor is that they all share the same goal which is to reach a verdict. The cohesion of the group is further enforced by the fact that the door is locked and the group cannot leave until such time that they all agree on the verdict without contest. The locked door forced them to become cohesive as well as the duty to decide on the fate of the 18year old boy. Interpersonal Learning. Interpersonal learning can be achieved with either an input of information, wherein people learn from the feedback that the other members in the group provide, or from an output of information wherein the environment provides an outlet where members can interact with each other openly and adaptively. Without the output Interpersonal Learning, the ability for the members to open up will be hindered and thus input interpersonal learning will be greatly limited as the people will hold their thoughts and not give the proper feedback required for the others to be able to learn from the experience. In the case of the movie, the initial environment was conducive to any of the jury members to open up. As a matter of fact, the initial environment was quite aloof to the point of hostile. The hostility burst forth as one member dissented from the majority vote. This same factor that caused the hostility, however, is the same factor that created the environment for the members of the jury to open up. Because of Henry Fondaââ¬â¢s character who refused to give a guilty verdict, a discussion ensued which allowed every single person in that jury to give his reasoning as to why a guilty verdict should be decided upon. With every single justification, more information is given out by the people from which the others give a reaction. This reaction serves as the feedback required for people to learn from. Within the group there are passive members who just listen instead of fully participating in the interaction. Although, they remain passive, learning is still occurring. Through the interaction of the others in the group, individuals are allowed to assess their own beliefs passively in relation to the discussion going on. This passivity was most apparent in the characters of John Fiedler (Juror #2), Edward Binns (Juror #6) and Robert Webber (Juror #12). They were not fully active in the discussion but whose decisions were based on the learning that occurred due to the interaction of the other members around them. Catharsis. Catharsis is the purging of strong emotions regarding the past or the present. There are different ways to achieve catharsis. Some express their emotions through art and literature. The most common, however, is just simply talking about it and having a good cry about the situation. In the case of a group, catharsis can occur through the constant interaction that comes into a group. In a sense, to fully achieve catharsis in a group setting, interpersonal learning is required. It is only through an environment when people are open and are allowed to give feedbacks that the opportunity to let go of strong emotions occur. In the movie, 12 Angry Men, a lot of the jurors have their own personal problems. The characters of Lee Cobb (Juror #3), Jack Klugman (Juror #6), Ed Begley (Juror #10) and George Voskovec (Juror #11) all had strong emotions rooted in their past that was brought to the fore because of the case of the 18 year old boy and the discussion to reach a verdict. Klugman, Begley and Voskovecââ¬â¢s issues were mainly rooted in discrimination and prejudice. Klugman had issues about slum children being discriminated as criminals when he was brought up in the slums; Begley based on his experiences, had a strong prejudice against poor people; while Voskovecââ¬â¢s issues deal with the fact that like the poor he is being discriminated as a foreigner/immigrant. The one who achieved the strongest catharsis was the character of Cobb has he experienced problems with his own son and was still having problems with his son. With Cobb, he was trying to get his anger towards his son out on the 18 year old boy who he found ungrateful for killing his father. He didnââ¬â¢t care much about the facts but cared only of exacting his revenge towards ungrateful children on the accused. With the constant deliberation as to the verdict, eventually, the truth came out and he was able to fully purge his emotions and give a rational verdict of not guilty. His breakdown was a sign of his complete catharsis regarding the matter of his son as this showed the realization of his problem as well as the release of it. Existential factors. Existential factors refer to the groupââ¬â¢s acceptance of life responsibilities. Initially, the jury was not accepting the responsibility of deciding on the life of the 18 year old boy. They casually decided that he was guilty simply because they had better things to do. It is only Henry Fondaââ¬â¢s character that made them realize the gravity of their decision. He alone made them accept the groupââ¬â¢s responsibility over the life and death of an 18 year old boy. As this was accepted, the group in earnest was able to weigh the pros and cons of the situation, re-assess the case in depth as well as analyze their selves and their own lives and make a true decision based on all these factors that affect both their life and the life of the accused boy. In conclusion, the trend in psychology is changing from individual psychoanalysis to group psychotherapy and rightly so as in the present group interaction and group dynamics can be found in almost any institution of society. Moreover, these groups have a great bearing on the lives of the people both as individuals as well as a whole society. The movie 12 Angry Men is a perfect example of the necessity of group psychotherapy as well as an example of how the therapeutic factors work in a given situation for a group. Sometimes, these factors are unconsciously done without the presence of a supervisor or counselor as witnessed in the movie. Notwithstanding, the movie has shown how important it is to have group psychotherapy as there are times where a group can decide on whether or not a person should continue living or should be punished by death.

Human Relations in Management Essay
W. L. Gore & Associates The goal of human relations is ââ¬Å"to create a win-win situation by satisfying employee needs while achieving organizational objectives.â⬠(Lussier, 2013). They do this by not operating the way normal companies do. No one in the company has a title and promotions are given based on who the employees agree thinks they deserve it. While this is something Iââ¬â¢ve never heard of I can see it working, you have to have a good workplace in order for something like this to be successful. Another thing that they have is sponsors who I think is something all jobs should offer. Once a person is finished being trained they are left to learn the small thing which can be overwhelming when left alone. Having someone who has been there and can help you through those moments and can relate to problems you may have done the job. With the systems effect all the people of the company are somehow affected by at least one person in the group (Lussier, 2013). You can see this in their sponsors, when one person gets a new role in the company they gain a new sponsor. This affects multiple people because as youââ¬â¢re promoted on the job you get more sponsors and the role of that sponsors is to be there to help guide the employee on the job. At some point everyone will be a sponsor to more than one person and they can use the things that they learned from their sponsor to help the person theyââ¬â¢ve been assigned to sponsor. The Hawthorne effect believes that an employeeââ¬â¢s performance would increase if they were given special attention (Lussier, 2013). Working for W.L. Gore & Associates there doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be anyone who will micromanage you to make sure youââ¬â¢re doing your job, there is no one to tell you good job after every task is competed. You are self-managed and you work on your own to get the job done. While this may seem like a terrible working environment to otherââ¬â¢s it doesnââ¬â¢t to me. I donââ¬â¢t think a person has to be given any special attention to want to increase their job performance; they should work to do so because they love their job and want the company to be successful. In order to be an effective sponsor you have to be able to follow all ten of the guidelines of human relations. You have to be positive and willing to listen to people; the person youââ¬â¢re sponsoring is going to be depending on you to help them when they are facing problems on the job. If you arenââ¬â¢t willing to go out of your way to help other and show that youââ¬â¢re truly show that you are interested in helping them become better on the job. I think the most important one of the ten is having a sense of humor, while itââ¬â¢s important to get the job done there is nothing wrong with having fun while do so. A good sponsor will try to find a way to truly help you enjoy what you do for a living, References Lussier, R.N. (2013). Human relations in organizations: Applications and skill building (9th ed).
