Death and the King’s Horseman, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, and The Storyteller all have multiple messages that can be obtained through reading these novels. Due to the great number messages that can be obtained throughout the readings, the authors have a lot of different, but also a lot of similar messages within the books as well. When reading these novels, the authors display a great deal of personal growth and change, a great empathy and compassion for others, and also a great image of what life is like in other cultures. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress written by Dai Sijie, is a story about re-educating in which is centered on the Cultural Revolution era. This story takes off early and gives you a great sense of what’s life was like during those days in China. The story is told by a seventeen year old boy, whose father and mother are very well known doctors throughout China. The young man and his friend are being sent away to a village on Phoenix Mountain to be re-educated. Once the Narrator and his friend Luo, are relocated at this village at they start the reeducated process right away which is an excess amount of manual labor. While there, both of the boys come across and strike an attraction towards the local tailor’s daughter, the Little Seamstress. The Little Seamstress can be describes as beautiful and delightful but has no sort of education or any ability to read. During those days, China was so heavily repressed and anybody that is being â€Å"re-educated† is p ermitted to read books of any sort, with only the exception of the little book of sayings written by Chairman Mao. A character by the name of Four Eyes, a son of a poet, has a hidden compartment which is filled with western novels. The boys c... ... is giving us an understanding of another culture in which most of the readers are not used too. Throughout reading these novel, with all the similar messages that are obtained within them, one main message from each other is similar, a better understanding of cultural difference. Authors Dai Sijie, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Wole Soyinka all exemplify what life is like in other cultures and regions of the world. The Machiguenga, The Yoruban tribe, and people involved in the Cultural Revolution era, are all timeframes and people that we will never understand or have to experience first handed due to where we come from. The life that we are used to is so different then what the life is like from the readings of these book, that these authors express that even if it’s different, we should be excepting of all lifestyles, even if we don’t fully understand their beliefs.

There are three common characteristics that would Impact types of marriages that have on family definitions. Monogamous, polygamous, and arranged marriages. Monogamous is where the family stays out of the decision. Polygamous is where they have multiple options, which is illegal in the US. This type of marriage finds it k to have multiple families. Arranged marriages are where the family of the bride and groom negotiate an arrangement before the two parties enter Into a relationship. . Family Is a group of two people or more related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing together. Household refers to all people who occupy a housing unit regardless of relationship. They should be viewed different because people that live together doesn't necessarily have to be related, which makes it a household. 3. The United States include fewer marriages, fewer children, later age of marriage, which causes an increase in single-parent families and step families. 4. Kennedy, America was experiencing a lot of political, social, environmental and economic activities.Generally, by 1963, the economy had shown signs of improvements and culturally people where having a more quality life. There were a lot of campaigns geared at fighting for total elimination of all forms of segregation something which often resulted into arrests of crusaders like Martin Luther King Junior. Back then getting admission to University was very much determined by one’s racial background. The year also saw the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 22 and the swearing of Lyndon Johnson as the 36th President of the USA.It is worth noting that during this time, the country was just recovering from an economic depression suffered as a result of the world wars. Americans were awakening on matters like imperialism, civil rights and gender equality. Due to the ideological differences between the Soviet Union and the US a lot of government expenditure was directed towards military activity and covert missions something which might have influenced the onset of the Vietnam War. Americans are today faced with great nutritional problems, compared to 1963 the number of children who are obese and overweight is on the increase.This is not a 21st century problem; it started in the 1960s although the popularity of fast foods has made it look like a 2 1st century problem. The most common foods back in 1963 included pizza, hamburger, chocolate, coffee for breakfast, and wines and spirits [Cavan, & Shonle1969, 79-99]. The children attended schools according to their parents’ abilities although public schools were the choice of majority as they were affordable compared to private schools. In the 1960s Americans had shifted from eating traditional foods to eating of processed foods something which can be attributed to busy lives.There was an increase in obesity incidences in late 1960s, a problem which persists up to date. Of interest also is the fact that more Americans had started to use microwaves to cook, atleast not many used wood stoves. Since a significant portion of the population was still working in farms, fresh farm produce was in big supply and therefore most families included in their meals fresh vegetables, fresh meat, milk, poultry, eggs and butter. Soft drink intake also gained popularity as people became busie r and fast food restaurants became very popular.Due to mechanization of farming, food prices went down as the country become self sufficient in terms of food supply (Sanjur, 1995. 45-67). Also fruit and vegetable meals were common as more and more Americans began to appreciate health eating habits. Conclusion The American family has evolved a lot since 1963 up to date. Change is evident in the way people dress, eat, and the way they view the external world. A lot of the above changes have been occasioned by technological advancement, globalization and the advent of internet.The economy has also grown a lot and today more American families earn above average in terms of finances meaning that they can afford a quality life. When tempted to play yo-yo, his mother would say, â€Å"Is that a good use of your time? † Yet, the family was heading to a gym where they would meet their father to play some sports.David O sborne in an article entitled â€Å"The Cult of Fatherhood,† he illustrated how he struggled as he took care of their kid since birth because his wife had to stay in the hospital as a gynecologist where she worked 100 hours a week. He is a nontraditional father as he called himself because that was not the usual set up in the family but they had to cope up with the challenges. David Osborne told that traditional mothers work harder than anyone else could imagine; he referred to his own mother who had to rush with urgency in doing household chores twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty five days a year.These are just two of the many families that experience complexity that affect their relationship and child rearing. Financially they are sufficient but in the advent of assuming roles and responsibilities, the future of the family is also affected. The Modern-day Family There are differences between the traditional family model and modern-day family and the primary reason for the abrupt change in the family set up was economic reason, since both mother and father have to work away from home leaving the kids unattended for some times and the whole family do not have quality time together.Everyone is rushing trying to get works done, especially mothers, which is according to David Osborne, divided responsibilities are the reason for the â€Å"central unresolved conflict in the lives of the American women† (p. 195). Also, in the advent of change, fathers have to assume different role, which touches the sensitive part of his masculinity. On the other hand, the Zeiss family is an example of a family that enjoys the benefit of a good life, with bigger home, a Mercedes car, children attending exclusive schools and extra time for playing sports in the evening.Despite togetherness they are time-bounded; without proper scheduling, they may miss important events of the day as a family. Verrengia writes as he quoted one statement, â€Å"We’ve sch eduled and outsourced a lot of our relationships; there isn’t much room for the flow of life, those little moments when things happen spontaneously† (p. 6). The changes that occur in the lives of the American family especially in the middle-class working families present predicament that affect the country as a whole. And many of the dilemmas facing America right now could be associated with the family set up and relationship between each family member.The many incident reports of crimes and marriage break ups have something to do with family relationships that were left unresolved. Thus, if one would not be creative enough to gather the family in one activity, most likely, the family would suffer for not having intimate time together. Contrast of Traditional and Modern-day Family These issues are by-products of the advent of modernization and industrialization in America and that; traditional family had their own way of coping up with the challenges and struggles of li fe without neglecting responsibility to one another.Traditional family and modern-day family are distinct with each other in different ways. First, they are different as they view home. Traditional family model existed during the pre-Civil war and pre-sexual revolution; it was the time when family relied on agriculture as the source of income. Traditional family, which occurred during the pre-industrial America, the home would serve as a market, which was the main income source of the family. Usually, the home was not just a place for relaxation but a place where women could perform other income-generating activities like soap making, clothing production, etc.Whereas, the modern homes that existed during the era of industrial and urban development, is viewed as a private place for the family to enjoy one another and to find relaxation. The home became the ideal place for domesticity or the place centered on family activities. Second, they differ in terms of gender role. During pre-i ndustrial revolution, husband and wife had equal rights with one another and at the same time, perform equally for the betterment of the family. Clarence Roberts Jr. stated that men â€Å"worked at their various crafts (near the farm) or worked on the family farm† (The Changing Family).Mothers worked in the house at the same time; her responsibility was important to the health and survival of the family† according to Clarence Roberts, Jr. There was no individual breadwinner and each had distinct role to perform – the wife for the house and husband in the farm. In contrary, gender roles had also changed in the modern-day society. During the post-industrial revolution, men finally realized their roles as breadwinners; so they left the responsibility of child rearing to the wife who was left alone. However change in gender role also change at the present day.To use the example of Osborne, one distinct change was the fact that mother and father had interchanged their roles from being a provider to housekeeper and vice-versa. Women’s role in earning money for the family had been part of her responsibility since the pre-industrial era, but due to the disappearance and removal of home market, women had to look for a job outside the house, which is carried out until today. Third, family relationship had changed forever. Pre-industrial period family was seen as having a strong kinship.By tradition, American family during that period practice extended family relations wherein relatives are part of the family such as in-laws, first cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. In an article entitled â€Å"Redefining Family, it stated there that the traditional parents’ role â€Å"gave way to affectionate bonds,† while husband and wife were â€Å"companionable. † In effect, women were active in spiritual direction in the family, which shows her value in the family. However, industrialization and technology was the cause for the collapse of the tie that binds the family together.Fathers had to left home to work in far away lands; women were left with the kids; extended family was lost; and, children had to work also The case of two families mentioned in this paper, is a scenario of the modern day family that grasp for time to be spent for the family. As each family member strives to give quality time, there is still missing because each is a human being that needs affection and togetherness. If not sufficiently given, the family might suffer. Notable Inventions by Month of Copyright or Patent Throughout history, each month celebrates the birth of its own share of patents and trademarks. Here are just some of the many examples to whet your appetite. In January, Willy Wonka was registered as a trademark in 1972, as was the Whopper burger in 1965, Campbell’s Soup in 1906, and Coca-Cola in 1893. February features the patent of the washing machine in 1827, the patent of the phonograph to Thomas Edison in 1878, and the registration of Sun-Maid (raisins) trademark in 1917. March boasts the patent of the Hula-Hoop in 1963, the patent of aspirin in 1899, and maybe the granddaddy of them all, the telephone, patented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. April got people moving with the invention of four-wheeled roller skates in 1863. May The helicopter was patented in 1943, and the first Barbie doll was registered as a trademark in 1958. September was mostly quiet, except for one thing: The first major book to be printed using movable type, the Guttenberg Bible, was published in 1452. In October, lawyer John J. Loud received a patent for the ballpoint pen in 1888, a handy writing tool that would see a lot of refinement over the years. And meals became even more special in 1958 when Ore-Ida received its official trademark for their deep-fried Tater Tots. In November, the first electric razor was patented by Jacob Schick in 1928, while Trivial Pursuit was trademarked in November 1981. December can brag about Scrabble being trademarked in 1948, and gum chewers can thank William Finely Semple who filed a patent for chewing gum in 1869.

Maybe I?m just a little uptight when I expect the commercial to tell me something about the product. For years music videos have been venues in which artist can show off other performing skills may it be acting or dancing. They were originally created for promotional purposes. These promotions are generally used to show the artist in a different light. Of course there are commercials for artist?s records as well. One commercial in particular bothered me. There is an RB artist by the name of ?Tank? it is obvious that he cares about his appearance because of his well chilled physique, but he has one commercial where he is working out; doing sets of bench-presses, push-up, pull-ups and so forth. What bothers me about the commercial is that you don?t hear any of his music and just watch him work out. From my understanding what the consumer is buying is his music and not his body. I know that sex sells but it seems to me that advertisers no longer want to do any work, just slap an attractive body on screen or paper and call it a day. In both Christianity and Islam, women have an inferior status to all men. Both religious groups focus a majority of their practices on charity and prayer, but in the Islamic religion their practice also centers on law, justice rules for daily life and destruction of non-believers. In Islam, government exists to uphold the laws found in the Qur’an, unlike the Christian religion where there is separation between government and religion. In the United States, the Muslim religion is practiced in a more secular way. This is because the government in the U.S. is democratic and therefore allows more flexibility in the practice of religion where as in other countries with a more theocratic government, religion is more restricted. This poem was written soon after the birth of Ann Butter Yeats in 1919. It shows his awareness of the changing times and his anxiety regarding his daughter’s future. The poem open with a physical storm but it soon becomes a social and political disturbance that threatens the future of his child. Venus was fatherless and free to choose her own husband, yet she married Vulcan, a lame blacksmith. Helen, though beautiful and rich caused sorrow to many with the Trojan war. These two women were beautiful and blessed with good fortune. In fact you could say that they were born with ‘The Horn of Plenty’ or cornucopia i. . the traditional symbol of prosperity. However they could not enjoy these benefits because of their beauty. Yeats says that beautiful women lead strange lives , ‘It is certain that fine women eat/ A crazy salad with their meat’. Yeats considers courtesy the chief of all virtues . It wins hearts even when there is not much beauty. He says a man may be made a fool by beauty but calm goodness makes him wise. A man may roam about looking for love, he may believe foolishly that he has found it but finally it is goodness of heart that settles and calms him.These lines refer to his own unsuccessful attempts to woo Maud Gonne, a fiery nationalist and to his marriage to Georgie Hyde Lees. His marriage made his life serene and full of order. ’ The poet wishes his daughter to be successful but modest, ‘the flourishing hidden tree. ’ It also symbolises the stability he wishes for. He wants her to be like a linnet and provide sweet music to all around her. He would like her to begin a debate or an argument only in fun. He says she should pursue everything light- heartedly. He doesn’t want her to be intense about anything.Yeats wants his daughter to flourish in a stable environment to be rooted to ‘a dear perpetual place’, a place dear to her and dear to others because of her. The next two stanzas have an intensely personal tone. His own experience with Maud Gonne and his opinion about her are shown here. He has loved and admired her but she has not done well in life. Due to this, his mind has become dry. He says that the worst thing that can happen to a person is for his heart to be choked with hate. If his daughter has no hatred towards anyone she will be safe and will be loved by all.Whatever sweeping changes occur in society, the linnet will not be blown off the tree by the wind, i. e. , she will be able to retain her position in an aristocratic household, in spite of political upheaval. Yeats next refers to Maud Gonne’s intellectual hatred (hatred based on ideology rather than emotion). He feels opinions are a curse, and have led Maud Gonne into marriage with a worthless man whom he calls contemptuously, ‘an old bellows full of angry wind. ’ She gives away all her beauty and fortune including the love of Yeats.The poet was hurt by Maud Gonne’s marriage to John Mac Bride, another revolutionary. Here he says that Maud Gonne has given away something valuable (his love) but his quiet and good natured wife values it. Yeats now states his belief that when hatred is removed from the soul, it recovers its original innocence. Then the person realises that only the soul can please itself and delight in itself. The soul is dependent on itself for its joy and sorrow. One needs fear only oneself. Heaven’s will is also the will of the soul. Yeats wants his daughter to realise all this so that she can be happy and peaceful.There may be hostility all around and revolutions may come and go and people may frown at her but she will be happy. He wishes his daughter to be married into an aristocratic household where tradition and culture are preserved. He feels that in the thoroughfares or streets where common people live, only arrogance and hatred can be found. On the other hand, a traditional and aristocratic household is rich in qualities of mind and heart. Such places are the workplace of beauty and innocence; he means the beauty and innocence of the mind and the heart.Yeats says that ceremony is another name for tradition which he symbolises in the spreading laurel tree. There are three different sections- A Mountain, An Island and A River. This paper summarizes and provides idea of the first and third section. The first section is on a mountain range, the Glacier Peak in the Cascades located in Central Washington. The issue encountered in the range is mining and its impacts. The section is an argument or debate between the damages done by mining vs. Benefits of mining. It is argued that mining is necessary as it helps the economy going well. Charles Park, the mineral engineer, argues that metals are finite and must be taken wherever they are located. According to him, metals are required for development and progress of the economy. However, David Brower, the militant conversationalist, thinks mining is a bad idea and that it ruins the land and country. He argues that wilderness would die if the environmental group loses the battle if they temporarily have a victory (McPhee, 1977). Mining causes serious environmental damage, not only to the land but also to the country. Various approaches can be followed to reduce mining. The people must reduce the consumption of minerals so that mining processes can be reduced. The minerals must be substituted with renewable products such as plastic can be used instead of metals, biomass instead of uranium for producing energy. There is also a requirement for better legislation and regulations. High penalties must be introduced for violating the rules (Izatt, Izatt, Bruening, Izatt Moyer, 2014). The third chapter is about the Colorado River and Floyd Dominy, a devoted dam builder. Brower argues to stop construction of dams in the Colorado River as he thinks that it is not worth. Dams are being built for securing the benefits of human use. Living and growing up in a dry area, Brower knows the importance of water and that dams are damaging the environment and flooding areas. The dams are asking the river to do more than it can at the Colorado River. He further argues that dams require ongoing maintenance that leads to other impacts such as water quality standards and loss of lives under water (McPhee, 1977). The first step in fighting a new dam construction is to reduce the consumption of water. Once the demand is nailed down, increasing water efficiency and conservation are cost-effective ways to greater dam constructions. The people must be taught reuse, groundwater recharge and renovating dams in a less harmful way are other alternatives (Figueres, Rockstrom Tortajada, 2012). Education can be provided to people with rainwater harvesting and water-saving practices so that there is the lesser demand for water, creating less supply. These practices would help in eliminating the impact of dams on the natural environment. The communities can also contribute to infrastructural costs by investing a fraction in water conservation and efficiency (Moore, 2013).
